Pharrell & Friends: The Coachella 2014 Edition

So unless you’ve been living under a rock the past few weeks, Coachella 2014 was EPIC. A few days ago I did a post on my favorite guest appearances at the fest over the past couple years, but Pharrell Williams has brought an entirely new definition of surprise guest performers. Over the past two weekends, he has brought onstage more than 10 other performers to join him in two jam-packed (pun intended) hour-long sets. Here are all of his amazing guests from both weekends. And you thought that you had friends.

In chronological order Pharrell’s A-List Guest List is as follows:

1. Nelly

Coachella is no stranger to guest appearances, but Pharrell started out strong with inviting Nelly onstage to preform his hit “Hot In Here.” Obviously the song was a smash and Nelly really brought the heat (again, pun intended). Thankfully, Nelly showed up without his famed band aid from circa 2002.

2. Busta Rhymes

3. Diddy

Everyone was super stoked when Busta showed up to duet with Pharrell, but then, all of the sudden, Diddy walks on stage and the three perfectly performed “Pass The Courvoisier, pt. II.” The song was amazing, but also a learning experience for me. 1. I didn’t know that there was a part II. 2. I still can’t understand a single thing that Busta says.

4. Tyler the Creator

As far as I’m concerned, Tyler the Creator was the most stoked person to join Pharrell on stage. He was bouncing around with excitement before he even got up there to join him in N.E.R.D.’s hit “Lap Dance.”

5. Snoop Dogg / Lion

Snoop was all over Coachella this year, making quite a few appearances. He snuck on stage pretty quickly and, before you knew it, they dropped into “Drop It Like It’s Hot.” They followed that track with “Beautiful,” and boy was it.

6. Diplo

Diplo popped up a bunch this weekend at different sets, my personal favorite being with Dillon Francis. Pharrell brought him on for a rousing performance of his Major Lazer collab hit “Aerosol Can.”

7. Gwen Stefani

This was the most surprising appearance of all to me. Gwen was most recently seen about to pop six weeks ago. Fast forward to Coachella, she’s got a brand new son and already has her amazing body back. The two performed Gwen’s pop hit “Hollaback Girl.” I can’t help but agree with Pharrell’s introduction: “The name of my album is called GIRL. And I can tell you right now, there is only but one incredible, historical, important, incredibly talented, fucking awesome, rad girl in the world.”

8. Pusha T

Following closely behind T.I.’s appearance the second weekend, Pusha T hopped on and performed Clipse’s “Grindin'” with Pharrell. The during his performance on Weekend 1, the dust made it really hard to see the stage (and almost impossible for poor Pharrell to sing), but the visuals came out in full force Weekend 2, especially during this performance.

9. T.I.

I haven’t heard much from T.I. in the recent years (aside from his hilarious reality show.) When “Blurred Lines” came on, I am sure most expected Robin Thicke to come on out and croon to this top hit of 2013. It was a pleasant surprise to have T.I. come out and throw it down. It’s clear that while T.I. has been a bit M.I.A. music-wise, his vocal skills clearly have not been lost.

10. Usher

Who doesn’t love a little Usher? I was more surprised to see Usher wearing a shirt than seeing him at all, but it was still an epic surprise. The two sang to “You Don’t Have To Call,” which felt like they had just thrown the crowd into a time machine and brought us back to 2009. Now my theory about Pharrell being an anti-aging time traveler has a bit more proof.

11. Jay Z

Pharrell’s ended Weekend 2 on a very high note. Jay Z joined him on stage for four separate tracks: “Frontin’,” “Excuse Me Miss,” “La La La (Excuse Me Miss Again),” and “I Just Wanna Love U (Give It 2 Me).” Queen Bey performed with her sister the first weekend, so it wasn’t all that surprising to me that Jay Z joined the crew of appearances, but it’s pretty tight that he stayed on stage for a full ten minutes to do more than just one song.

Pharrell completed his entire Coachella experience with “Get Lucky” and “Happy.” After the shows that he put on, I am sure those two songs were truly felt by the crowd. With the most guest appearances ever in Coachella history, it’s hard to imagine any other artist holding a candle to these two sets next year. Best of luck artists of 2015!
