This year in entertainment was quite exciting. We’ve seen huge breakout stars, unexpected comebacks and revivals, and some of the best acts of years past managing to maintain their top-tier status. Here are the Top 9 male entertainers of 2014; one’s who are guaranteed to have an even more epic 2015.
1. Ed Sheeran:
Mr. Ed has had quite the year. His new album, “X,” charted at #1 on the UK Albums Chart and the US Billboard 200.
The album has already had some very successful singles including “Don’t”and “Sing.” He even performed “Thinking Out Loud” at the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show during the debut of the show’s famed million dollar bras.
This year, he was the biggest-selling artist in the UK, Ireland, and New Zealand. This ginger train isn’t stopping either: he is nominated for a slew of Grammys, including Album of the Year, Best Pop Vocal Album, and Best Song Written for Visual Media. He’s even starting to branch out, working on a song with famous EDM producer Martin Garrix for a new track to be released in 2015.
If that’s not enough (and it is), he has supported causes for street sex workers, including raising over $40,000 pounds during a show in Bristol. He stated, “It’s good to show insight that these people are real people with real emotions and they deserve the same charity work as anyone else.” So basically we have a talented, good-looking, and selfless guy that just keeps cranking out hits. If he isn’t #1 of 2014, I don’t know who possibly could be.
2. One Direction:
Still backed by powerhouse Simon Cowell, these 5 Brits just keep going and going and going. They booked 3 world tours, including their next, “On The Road Again” tour set for 2015. Their tours in 2013 and 2014 were totally sold out and extra dates were added to satiate their giant, mostly teenage girl, fan base. Their hit song, “Story of My Life,” has had over 308 million views on YouTube.com.
To add to their success, they have had two best-selling perfumes, You & I and Our Moment, both of which have hilarious commercials.
Their fans can be a little nuts. And by that I mean really nuts. They write weird fan fiction stories and stalk them to the point that would make me buy a private island, but some fans are just hilarious, like the person that runs a hilarious fake Zayn Malik Instagram account. I think that part of the reason these guys are so popular is that, yes they are hot, but they also clearly love what they are doing. I saw them in Chicago on their 2014 tour and it was one of my favorite shows. They were just so obviously having a blast on stage and the singing was great. I had an absolute blast, so I get it, the rest of the world gets it, and 2015 will get it.
3. Jason Derulo:
Jason Derulo hit the music scene in a big way this year. With hits like “Wiggle” ft. Snoop Dogg and “Bubblegum” ft Tyga, Jason has had a very popular, butt-centric year. “Wiggle” has become so popular that even a hilarious parody of the song has had millions of YouTube views.
His most recent album, Talk Dirty, has been a huge hit, with many of his songs based around the most popular body part of 2014: the butt. Some people think that this is a brilliant new-comer, but many of us remember the Jason Derulo of yesteryear. Remember “Ridin’ Solo,” “Whatcha Say,” and “In My Head?” Yep, same guy.
His biggest hit this year had everybody wiggling, including Snoop Dogg. Though, in the video, Snoop mostly just watches with binoculars. I don’t want to use the word pervert, but if the shoe fits…
I know that Snoop ends “Wiggle” with the line, “Damn girl, you’ve got a bright future behind you.” Now that may be true (I like to think that I have a great butt), but their bright future is in front of them. At least I hope so because Snoop is way to skinny to have a nice butt.
4. Justin Bieber:
Love him or hate him, and most people hate him, Justin Bieber has constantly been a talked about celebrity. This year in particular, but for the worst of reasons. It’s hard to rattle off all of the crazy stuff that he has done, but to name a few: he left a pet monkey at a German airport, he’s been deposed for having his body guards beat up people, and he’s been arrested for drag racing under the influence while in Miami with his father.
He also egged his neighbors house (so mature) and was arrested and charge with assault and dangerous driving after he hit a minivan with his ATV in Canada and subsequently got in a “physical altercation” with the other driver. Many wonder what happened to the bad boy’s music. I think that his superstar manager, Scooter Braun, has busied himself with more successful, and much less volatile, clients like Ariana Grande and Martin Garrix.
Like many of the past years, his on-again, off-again relationship with Selena Gomez has continued to be under the microscope. They are currently off, but an image of the two (where she doesn’t look all that happy, to be honest) was the second most-liked picture on Instagram this year. When he wasn’t with Selena, Bieber was bouncing from C-List Instagram “models” on almost a daily basis. To top off his year, he bleached his hair blonde and, naturally, the Internet blew up. That’s exciting and all, but nothing can top the slap heard ’round the world. The egotistical crooner finally got the bitch slap the world’s been waiting for from none other than Orlando Bloom after Justin thought it would be appropriate to make a sexual joke about his ex-wife (again, super mature).
5. Calvin Harris:
Calvin Harris is one of the premier DJs in the world and he has a price tag that reflects that: $66 million dollars for 2013 alone, making him the highest paid DJ in the world. He released a new album, Motion, this year and has hit some singles like “Summer” and “Blame” ft. John Newman out of the park. He has even brought back a bit of his old school vibe by singing on his own tracks (“Summer” is a perfect example of that). Calvin has been a staple of the EDM scene since forever (or at least since I have, and I consider that to be forever).
He has done some great collaborations with other artists including Ellie Goulding (“I Need Your Love”) and Florence + The Machine (“Sweet Nothing”), but his most famous is undoubtedly “We Found Love” ft. Rihanna. He and the Barbados beauty won the “Best Short Form Video” Grammy in 2012 for their hit track.
The man is an EDM machine, and a fucking good one at that. I’ve had the pleasure of seeing him at Ultra Music Festival, multiple times at Coachella, Electric Daisy Carnival, Lollapalooza, HARD events, and single shows at clubs and have never been disappointed. He also has residencies at casinos in Vegas and essentially spends his life living out of a suitcase, but $66,000,000 is $66,000,000 no matter how you slice it. I know you shouldn’t do things to the money, but it certainly doesn’t hurt.
6. 5 Seconds of Summer:
5SOS isn’t your average boy band, mostly because they are actually a band. As in they play real instruments. The four Aussies’ chart-topper “She Looks So Perfect” went triple-platinum and hit number one on charts in five different countries and the album itself hit number one in 13 different countries. After being noticed by the boys of One Direction, 5SOS was picked up to open for the American leg of their Where We Are tour this year. Their talent, combined with that visibility, has snowballed into their own world tour next year called “Rock Out With Your Socks Out” (they appeal to teenage girls, ok?) The Aussies have been quite outspoken, and naked, all over the internet.
Much to the pleasure of teenage girls and to the disdain of those girls’ mothers, the boys have taken a liking to posting lots of PG-13 pics to their Instagram. While the boys can be compared to the likes of the 1D boys, they stand on their own feet, talent-wise.
The Australian pop-rock bandmates, Luke Hemmings, Michael Clifford, Calum Hood, and Ashton Irwin, actually play instruments. They performed their hit song “Amnesia” at the 2014 MTV Music Video Awards, where they also won the “Best Lyric Video” Award. They’ve cleaned up at other award shows, too, including two Teen Choice Awards and three European MTV VMA Awards.
Eminem is easily one of my favorite artists. I grew up listening to him in secret and finding sneaky ways to purchase his albums because of the Parent Advisory stickers. The FCC may hate him, but I love the guy. He has the tendency to disappear for years and then pop up out of nowhere and blow the world away with new music.
His most recent album, The Marshall Mathers LP II, debuted at number one and he became the first artist since the Beatles to have four singles score in the Top 20 of the Billboard Hot 100 Chart. The first single off this album, “Berzerk,” was a big hit and a nod to the Beastie Boys. I honestly don’t really like that track, but I loved “The Monster” ft. Rihanna. “Love The Way You Lie” ft. Rihanna is one of my absolute songs, so naturally this went over big. Staying true to form, Eminem put out songs that mattered to him; I have always felt that his raps were windows to his soul.
He created “Headlights” and featured Fun. frontman Nate Reuss, who sang the chorus of the emotionally-charged song, where Eminem apologizes to his mother for the way he has treated her in the past. He even references his hit “Cleanin’ Out My Closet,” and apologizes for the way he treated her. No one saw that one happing, though I guess everyone grows up.Speaking of, Hailie isn’t Eminem’s little girl anymore, she’s a freshman at Michigan State University now. WTF happened to all this time? He went on a three-city Monster Tour with Rihanna this year, and I was lucky enough to attend the LA show. I love me some Rihanna, but she took up way too much stage time. It’s safe to say that when Eminem went on stage everyone went berzerk and the man truly is a Rap God.
Now Jay isn’t exactly a stranger, but, like Eminem, talent doesn’t just go away.
His last album, Magna Carta Holy Grail (his 12th, no less), debuted at number one on the Billboard Top 200 this past year and garnered him 9 Grammy Nominations in 2014. He also appeared with his wife, Beyoncé, on her fifth album. The two performed her hit track “Drunk in Love” at the 56th Grammy Awards Show. The married money-makers hit the US with a combined “On The Run” tour this summer and had a hit documentary of the adventure air on HBO. His music endeavors make the man millions, but that’s just a drop in the bucket to this media mogul. Jay is a part owner of the Brooklyn Nets, owns multiple clubs and restaurants, is the co-brand director for Budweiser Select (the Jay-Z of beers?), and has recently invested in a real estate venture called J Hotels. They just bought up a $66 million mid-block parcel in Chelsea, New York.
Like the slap heard round the world (see Justin Bieber above), there was the elevator footage seen round the world. No one really knows what happened, but the whole world reacted to Solange, Beyoncé’s sister, kicking Jay-Z in an elevator. The family remained tightly knit through the scandal and, to this day, no one knows what truly happened in there. But what we do know? That the two of them have just the cutest little girl on the planet. Jay + Bey = Blue Ivy.
Pharrell was 2014’s comeback king. Obviously the first thing that comes to mind with him this year is his infectious tune “Happy.” In a move never seen before, at least not with someone of such notoriety, he released a 24-hour music video for the song that featured Magic Johnson, Steve Carell, Jimmy Kimmel, Jamie Foxx, Odd Future, and, I don’t know, 23 more hours worth of people. His two other giant music hits were Daft Punk’s “Get Lucky” and Robin Thicke’s “Blurred Lines” (which he also wrote and produced.) The second of the two songs was incredibly popular, but not liked by everyone. The song had some serious date-rape undertones (I mean, look at the title!), but that spurred one of the greatest parodies ever made. The parody is so popular that it has received over 4,000,000 YouTube views. As one of the headliners at Coachella 2014, he had more guest appearances on his set than ever. He was nominated for 7 Grammy Awards in 2014 and started his Dear G I R L Tour.
He featured dancers that, as a group, became famous in their own right called “The Baes.” If all of this was not enough for him, he replaced CeeLo Green as a coach on the voice. All of this just goes to back my theory that this man cannot possibly sleep or be in his forties. He’s clearly a vampire. To top off his amazing year, it’s important to remember his top…hat. Arby restaurants everywhere gained free advertising from Pharrell’s favorite accessory. It even has its own Twitter! You can get your own hat made to order from a designer named Nick Fouquet, though good luck topping Pharrell’s famous topper!
