While working on The 2015 Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show, I had the privilege of interviewing some of the most brilliant minds behind the biggest night in fashion, including the show’s Executive Producer, Creative Director, official makeup and hair stylists, and the President and CMO of L Brands.
By speaking with the brains behind the beauties, I was able to provide a more in-depth analysis of the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show, as well as offer exclusive behind-the-scenes facts for fans and fashionistas alike. Below are my interviews with President and Chief Marketing Officer of Brand and Creative Services for L Brands Edward G. Razek, the show’s official hairstylist, Akki, makeup artist Dick Page, Creative Director Sophia Neophitou-Apostolou, and the VS Fashion Show Executive Producer Monica Mitro.
For more than thirty years, Mr. Razek has been a significant contributor to Victoria’s Secret’s transformation into one of the most powerful brands in the world. His cutting edge television commercials, internationally recognized fashion show, and break through public relations efforts lead the industry and consistently rank among the most effective brand communication vehicles anywhere.
On what he looks for in an Angel: Strength, confidence, vitality, beauty, personality, [and] energy. Someone with great spirit and, hopefully, a nice person.
VS Fashion Show Executive Producer Monica Mitro shared the ins and outs of how this spectacular event comes to fruition each year, including the planning, preparation, and
execution of this famous fashion show.
Every aspect of the show is extremely detailed, starting with the design of the collection, choosing the models, set design, lighting and finally the television edit. – Monica Mitro
Ever since my first viewing of the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show, my favorite part has always been the wings so, naturally, interviewing Sophia Neophitou-Apostolou, was a dream come true. The Creative Director, who has worked with the show for six consecutive years, shared all things wings, including how they choose artisans, what inspires each show’s themes, and the immense amount of work and dedication that goes into each and every wing.
We have so many amazing artisans now, we are truly fortunate as we can tailor the sketch to go with the vendor who is best to realize the vision. This year, we had amazing wings from two new vendors who were perfect. One created tiny snowflake wings and another created the amazing paper wing for the opening look.
Akki, arguably one of the busiest workers day-of, took some time to answer questions about not only how he styles the Angels’ hair, but how you can, too!
Spend some time and find the hair-look that makes you the most comfortable and beautiful on a day-to-day basis.
When speaking with Dick Page, who has served as the official makeup artist for The Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show for three years, shared behind-the-scenes secrets like how he decides the themes, what the show is like on the day of, and how you can look like an Angel every day!
Keep it simple. Healthy glamour doesn’t mean a heavy hand with makeup. Go with shades of rose, soft brown, plum, and muted gold for foolproof coloring. [Then] finish with a few coats of mascara and a lightly groomed eyebrow.
